If you dream of becoming a proficient sewist, then you need these four sewing tips: (1) how to learn a new sewing skills; (2) how to pace yourself; (3) why and how to take care of your body so that you can sew for years to come; and (4) how to truly become the boss of a sewing skill.

So if you’re ready for your four sewing tips, let’s not waste a single minute more…

Tip #1

For the love of your beautiful fabric and your wallet, I beg of you…

Do NOT attempt to learn a new technique during the actual construction of the garment, using your fabulous fashion fabric.

You may end up in a puddle of tears. I did.

I shudder to think of how many lengths of fabric would still be “alive” and well today if I had known this one tip early in my journey of learning how to sew my own clothes. Not to mention how much money I would not have wasted on “failed” projects.

Just don’t do that to yourself. Instead pause for a moment and follow my advice HERE!

Tip #2

Sewing is fun. At least, I think so, and I hope you do too.

So why are you rushing?!

Instead I urge you to slow. down. Luxuriate in the process of sewing. Single task and stop fixating on arriving at the finish line.

I promise you, if you never give up, you will get to a finish line. And it doesn’t matter how long it takes. However, it does matter that you enjoy the journey there.

Tip #3

One body. One life. Take care of both.

I love to sew, but sewing can be hard on the body. That’s the truth of it.

So I urge you to always keep sewing ergonomics in mind and break up the process of sewing so that you can avoid physical burnout — and costly mistakes.

Remember right angles rule.

Tip #4

Finally, if you truly want to master any skill, you cannot expect to do it once and done. But you knew that, right?!

Skill is the result of repetition, repetition, repetition.

So wait for it…

If you don’t loathe the project, then you absolutely should consider repeating the same project at least three times — yes, three times, minimum.

This will help to solidify that you are indeed the boss of the techniques used in its construction!

Plus, I have secret for you…

If you choose to make a dress in different fabrications using the same pattern, you will be surprised how totally different it looks. You can trust me on this.

The End

You now have four more tips to help you get really good at sewing. So what are you waiting on, go make yourself proud.
