After your sewing machine, one of the most important sewing tools is…
Wait for it…
your dressmaker’s shears.
If you’re to sew insanely pretty clothes, then you need a pair of sharp, quality dressmaker’s shears. Sharp, quality dressmaker’s shears will ensure that you have the best chance of making nice, even strokes that result in lovely, even cut edges.
Because in case you didn’t know, smooth, even cut edges are a MUST for accurate sewing at the sewing machine.
Plus, they make for a garment pretty on the inside too.
I currently have three dressmaker’s shears in my collection. (What can I say, I love to have options!)
I have a shiny, gorgeous pair of Gingher 8-Inch Micro-Serrated Edge Knife Dressmaker’s Shears.
And I have a pair of Kai 5210 Dressmaking Shears. What my Kai lacks in beauty, she makes up for in function.
But currently, I’m seriously crushing on my latest addition…
After having a sharp pair of dressmaker’s shears, the number #2 tip for cutting lovely, even edges is to…
keep the bottom blade of your shears in contact with the cutting surface at all times as you cut!
And these Fiskars RazorEdge Fabric Shears are brilliantly designed to make that stupid simple.
True, they aren’t as gorgeous as my Gingher (and I do love me some pretty), but they make up for that with their absolutely brilliant design.
Here’s what I’ve fallen for:
- They glide through a variety of fabrics — from start to tip — like a sailboat gliding on a serene lake on an easy, breezy day. These girls are sharp!
- The cutting action is smooth and easy.
- And THAT handle shape!
It is that last point — THAT handle shape — that makes me swoon.
Because of how bent the handle is (a right angle triumphs again!), your fabric has NO choice but to lay flat as you cut. And if you can minimize fabric lifting as you cut, you are halfway to ending up with lovely, smooth, even cut edges.
Plus, they are reasonably priced! So there is no reason why any dressmaker can’t have a pair of these in her sewing kit! (If you live near a Joann, don’t you even think of buying these shears without a 40%, 50%, or 60% off coupon!)
Love, love, love these shears!
You’ve met my latest crush: Fiskars RazorEdge Fabric Shears.
And you now know why I couldn’t resist falling!
Smooth, even cut edges are the hallmark of a dressmaker who honors the fabric and cares about the finished quality of the garments she sews. These shears make all that easier to attain with less effort.
